AI Agent Demand by Profession: 2026 Search Index

Every week someone tells me which profession is "adopting AI agents fastest", and almost nobody shows a number. So I pulled one. This page counts how often people search Google for AI agents, AI and AI tools for a specific job, from real estate agents and lawyers to plumbers and PhD students, and how that changes month by month.

The data is Google's own search volume estimates, read through the DataForSEO API for 137 professions in 15 sectors. It covers the United States and the whole world, and goes back to November 2022, which is as far as Google Ads keeps monthly history. A new pull lands every month and the tables below rebuild themselves from it, so the date on the numbers is the date that matters.

One thing to hold on to before reading any figure: a search is someone asking a question. It measures curiosity and intent, not how many people already use an agent at work.

Top 25 professions by US search demand

Ranked by average US searches a month over the last 12 months. Each profession counts four phrasings, such as "AI agent for real estate agent", "AI agents for real estate agents", "AI for real estate agents" and "AI tools for real estate agents". Fastest-growing professions, 12 months

Growth is the latest three months against the same three months a year earlier, which takes out seasonality and most of the rounding noise. Only professions with a real base qualify, so a jump from 10 to 40 searches cannot top the list.

Demand by sector

The 137 professions roll up into 15 sectors. A sector total adds each phrase once, so two professions that Google reports as one grouped figure are not counted twice.

Sector totals add every phrase in the sector once, so overlapping professions (realtors and real estate agents, lawyers and attorneys) are not double-counted where Google Ads reports them as one grouped figure. Averages over the 12 months to August 2026.

What the first edition shows

These notes are about the first pull, taken on 4 October 2026 with data through August 2026. The tables above will move on; the paragraphs below stay as a record of what the data said at launch.

Small business is where the growth is. Searches for AI agents, AI and AI tools for small business averaged 4,453 a month in the US, the largest single row, and the June to August 2026 quarter was 254% above the same quarter of 2025. The small business sector as a whole grew 195% on the same basis. If you sell to owners rather than to departments, this is the line to watch. Real estate is small but moving. Real estate agents searched 965 times a month, up 80% year on year, and the real estate sector grew 42%. Legal grew 76%, led by law firms at plus 126%. Both are professions where the work is a long tail of follow-ups, documents and scheduling, which is the kind of work people picture handing to an agent.

"Agent" is still a minority word. Only about 5% of the searches in this index use the word "agent" (2,153 a month in the US). Most people ask for "AI" or "AI tools" for their job. But the agent-phrased searches grew 54% year on year, against 6% for everything else. The word is catching up from a low base.

Broad interest has plateaued in several white-collar fields. Marketing fell 35%, creative 32% and students 47% year on year, after strong gains the year before. My read: those groups found their tools in 2024 and 2025 and stopped searching for the category. That is a guess about intent, and the data cannot prove it.

The US is not the whole story. Worldwide, the same phrases averaged 126,320 searches a month, roughly 2.8 times the US figure, and fell 9% year on year while the US rose 8%.

All 137 professions and the exact phrases

The full table, grouped by sector. "Under 10" means Google Ads reported no measurable volume. A phrase marked "not counted" returned exactly the same monthly series as a broader topic, so its figure measures the topic and not the profession; the methodology explains the rule.

A new line appears each month with its own date and data window. Google sometimes revises past months, and every pull re-reads the full history, so older figures can shift slightly between editions. Each pull is stored separately, which keeps the revisions auditable.

Methodology

Where the numbers come from

Every figure is a Google Ads search volume estimate, the same data Keyword Planner shows advertisers, read through the DataForSEO Google Ads search volume endpoint. Each month I send two requests with every phrase in them: one for the United States, and one with no location, which DataForSEO returns as worldwide. Both use English. Google Ads keeps four years of monthly history, so each pull asks for all of it and the series is rebuilt from scratch every time.

Which phrases count

Each profession gets four phrasings: "AI agent for" plus the singular, and "AI agents for", "AI for" and "AI tools for" plus the plural. A few professions are searched by their field rather than their title, so they get field phrases instead or as well: small business, startups and founders, ecommerce, Shopify stores, dropshipping, HVAC, HR, talent acquisition and medical billing. The exact phrase list for every profession is in the full table and the CSV. "Of which AI agent" counts only phrases containing "AI agent" or "AI agents".

Grouped keywords

Since 2016 Google has reported one combined volume for groups of similar keywords, as DataForSEO's help center explains, so "AI agent for lawyer" and "AI agents for lawyers" can come back with the same number. I handle that two ways. Inside any total, phrases with identical monthly series over the full history are counted once (flat lines under 50 a month are exempt, because flat 10s coincide by chance). And each pull also fetches about 125 broader topic phrases, such as "ai music", "ai for law" and "ai for accounting". When a profession phrase returns exactly the same series as one of those, Google has folded it into the topic, so it is left out of every total and marked in the full table. In the first edition that removed 32 US phrases, the largest being "AI for musicians", which Google reports together with "AI music" at 25,425 searches a month.

Rounding and small numbers

Google Ads does not report exact counts. Monthly values come in fixed steps: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 70, 90, 110, 140 and so on up to 1,000, then 1,300, 1,600, 1,900, 2,400 and wider steps above that. Below roughly 10 searches a month it reports nothing, and some keywords return no data at all; I count both as zero and print "under 10". Because small figures move in steps, the growth ranking only includes professions with at least 30 searches a month in the year-earlier quarter, and the averages are rounded to whole searches.

How growth is calculated

12-month growth compares the sum of the latest three months with the same three months a year earlier. 2-year growth compares the same latest quarter with the quarter two years earlier. Monthly averages use the latest 12 months. The latest month is the most recent month Google Ads has published, usually the month before last at the time of the pull.

What this is not

Search volume is demand for information. It is not adoption, spend or usage, and it does not say who searched: a student writing an essay can search "AI for lawyers" too. It counts Google only, in English, and only the phrases I chose, so a profession that searches with different words is undercounted. Professions that get their AI through existing software may never search at all. Treat the index as a measure of where curiosity is growing, and compare professions with each other rather than reading any single number as a market size.

Refresh cadence

The index refreshes monthly, from scripts that run without anyone editing the tables by hand. If a pull fails, the page keeps the last good data and says which month it runs through.
