"AI market research" is five jobs sharing one name: desk research, demand data, audience, competitors and surveys. Each needs a different kind of tool. No single product on this page does all five, and none of the top results for the phrase is organised by the job.
Look at who wrote those pages. In Google's US results on 10 October 2026, one Manus page, a prompt box with two sample reports, ranked first for all three common phrasings. quantilope's own list ranked second for "best ai tools for market research", with quantilope at number one. Research platforms, ranking themselves.
Those lists skip the prices. quantilope's pricing column has no numbers, while its own pricing page says "Pricing starts at $2,300/month" for three users, as of October 2026. That is an insights-department number.
This guide is for the founder, small marketing team or product manager doing research without an agency or a research budget: five jobs, the tool I would start each with, and what it costs both ways. For academic papers, the AI research assistant guide covers that lane instead.
Ten tools for five jobs, priced as of October 2026
- Desk research on no budget: Gemini's free plan. It lists Deep Research, while Claude Free has no Research at all.
- Cited answers with paid data sources: Perplexity Pro, $17 a month billed annually.
- Demand: Google Trends, free. Exploding Topics adds a curated trend database from $39 a month billed annually.
- Audience: SparkToro. Three free previews a month, then $38 a month, sold only by the year.
- Competitor traffic: Semrush Traffic & Market, $289 a month either way.
- Surveys with AI analysis: SurveyMonkey Advantage, $39 a month billed annually. Its $149 monthly plan does not list AI analysis.
- A lean paid stack is $94 a month on annual billing. quantilope's entry plan starts at $2,300 a month.
- Desk-research tools cannot ask your customers anything. A survey or an interview still does that part.
How I compared them
I read every pricing and help page cited here on 10 October 2026, in US dollars, and read both billing states wherever a page had a toggle. Five questions sorted the tools:
- Which job does it do?
- What is free? A capped plan, a trial and a public page all count, labelled as such.
- Which is the cheapest plan with the AI part? Deep research for desk work, AI analysis for surveys.
- What does it cost each way? Where a page prints only the annual rate, I say so.
- Where does the data come from? Only what the vendor's page says.
What I did not do: open an account, buy a plan or run a research task in any of these tools. I have not used them as a customer, so judge report quality yourself on the free routes.
Gemini and SurveyMonkey served rupees to an Indian connection, so I read their US pages. ChatGPT's pricing page did not render its prices; the Plus and Pro figures come from OpenAI's help centre.
Quick comparison
| Job | Tool | Free route | Cheapest plan with the AI part | Annual / monthly, as printed | Data source, per the page |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Desk research | Perplexity | Cited answers; no research line | Pro ("Deep research") | $17 / not printed | The web, with citations; Pro adds PitchBook, Statista and S&P Capital IQ |
| Desk research | ChatGPT | "Limited deep research" | Plus ("Expanded deep research") | n/a / $20 billed monthly | Public web, sites you name, your files, enabled apps |
| Desk research | Gemini | Lists "Deep Research" | Free | $0 (AI Plus $4.99, AI Pro $19.99 monthly) | "hundreds of sources in real-time", per Google |
| Desk research | Claude | Research marked "No" | Pro | $17 ($200 up front) / $20 | Not described |
| Demand data | Google Trends | All of it | No paid plan | $0 | Google search interest |
| Demand data | Exploding Topics | Homepage trend list; search is Pro | Entrepreneur | $39 / not printed | "consumer behavior signals across dozens of platforms", curated |
| Audience | SparkToro | 3 previews a month | Personal | $38 ("$450 billed yearly") / not sold | Not stated |
| Competitor traffic | Semrush Traffic & Market | Trial, monthly view only | Pro | $289 / $289 | Not stated |
| Surveys | SurveyMonkey | Basic: 10 questions per survey | Advantage ("Analyze with AI") | $39 ($468 a year) / Standard $149 lacks AI analysis | Your respondents; Audience panel extra |
| Surveys | Typeform | Free plan, limits not printed | Business ("Analyze performance with AI") | $91 / $129 | Your respondents |
"Not printed" means the vendor's page showed no such price on 10 October 2026. It never means free.
Read the free-route column first: nine of the ten give you something at $0, and Semrush offers a trial instead. At the other end, competitor traffic alone costs more than the cheapest AI plans for the other four jobs combined.
Which free plans include deep research?
Short answer, as of October 2026: Gemini's does, and ChatGPT's lists a limited version. Perplexity's card lists no research line, and Claude's grid says No.
| Assistant | Free plan | Entry paid plan with research | Top individual plan | Report quota printed? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gemini | Lists "Deep Research" | AI Plus $4.99 (2x Free's usage); AI Pro $19.99 (4x) | Ultra $99.99 (5x AI Pro) or $199.99 (20x) | No; limits refresh every 5 hours up to a weekly cap |
| ChatGPT | "Limited deep research" | Plus $20 monthly: "Expanded" | Pro $100, $200 or $500: "Maximum" | No; an in-product counter |
| Perplexity | No research line | Pro $17 billed annually: "Deep research" | Max $167 billed annually: "Expert level research" | No |
| Claude | Research "No" | Pro $17 annual or $20 monthly: "Yes" | Max $100 or $200: "Yes" | No |
None of the four prints a deep-research report count, so run your first report on Gemini's or ChatGPT's free plan and see where it stops.
1. Perplexity: cited desk research, with paid data sources on Pro

Perplexity's FAQ makes the promise that matters most for research: "Every answer includes inline citations that show exactly where each claim comes from." The free plan gives you that, with "Access to basic AI models", but its card lists no deep research.
Pro and Max add PitchBook, Statista and S&P Capital IQ as sources
Per the FAQ, "Pro and Max add premium data sources for finance and market intelligence work". For anyone sizing a market, that is the reason to pay. Pro is $17 a month billed annually and lists "Deep research", as of October 2026. Max is $167 a month billed annually, with "Expert level research" and "higher limits on Deep Research".
The page prints no monthly price, so confirm at checkout before assuming a monthly option exists.
Pros
- Citations on every answer, free plan included
- Premium data sources from Pro up
Cons
- No deep research on the free card
- Only annual prices printed, and no report quota on any plan
2. ChatGPT: deep research you can fence to specific sites
OpenAI's help centre says deep research "can work with uploaded files, search the public web or specific sites, and use enabled ChatGPT apps." You can "restrict research to only the websites or domains you enter", and every output includes "citations or source links".
That domain fence is the useful part. Give it the five competitor sites you care about and the research stays inside them.
Plus expands deep research for $20 a month
Free lists "Limited deep research" and Plus lists "Expanded deep research" at $20 a month billed monthly, per OpenAI's help centre, as of October 2026. Pro comes in three tiers, $100, $200 and $500 a month, with "Maximum deep research". I could not read Go's price.
A counter in the product shows what is left, and fixed allowances reset every 30 days from first use.
3. Gemini: Deep Research on a $0 plan

Google's subscriptions page puts "Deep Research" on the Free card, "$0/ month with a Google Account". As of October 2026, that makes Gemini the plain $0 answer for desk research.
Google prints a usage multiplier instead of a report count
The footnote says: "Your limit refreshes every 5 hours until you reach your weekly limit." Google's help page adds that Deep Research "will consume more of your usage". Paid plans raise the multiplier: Google AI Plus is $4.99 a month for 2x Free's usage, Google AI Pro is $19.99 for 4x, and Ultra is $99.99 or $199.99 for 5x or 20x AI Pro. All monthly as of October 2026, with no annual toggle.
4. Claude: Research starts on the paid plans

Claude's free plan can "Search the web, create files, and run code", but the comparison grid marks Research "No" on Free and "Yes" on Pro and both Max tiers. For desk research, Pro is the entry point.
As of October 2026, Pro is "$17 Per month with annual subscription discount ($200 billed up front). $20 if billed monthly." Max costs $100 a month for 5x Pro's usage or $200 for 20x. The pricing page does not say what Research produces or how many runs a plan includes.
5. Google Trends: the free demand baseline
Google Trends is not an AI tool, and nothing on the pages I read describes an AI feature in it. It is here as the free demand data the AI tools sit on top of.
Trending Now loads without signing in. It shows "Search volume" in buckets such as "1M+" and "200K+", when each trend started, a "Trend breakdown" and an "Export" button, with filters for location, category and time.
The buckets are the catch: "200K+" says a topic is big without saying how big. Check here first, then decide whether the question deserves a paid tool.
6. Exploding Topics: a curated trend database, billed annually

Exploding Topics says it spots "under-the-radar trends months or years before they go mainstream" from "consumer behavior signals across dozens of platforms", then curates them by hand. The free route is the homepage: a public "Discover Exploding Topics" list with volume and growth, and a "Search Trends" box marked PRO.

Every plan is priced by the month and billed by the year
Entrepreneur is $39 a month, Investor $99 and Business $249, as of October 2026. One version of the pricing page prints "Billed Annually" under each price, neither version has a monthly toggle, and I found no month-to-month price. Each card offers a 7-day free trial.
Entrepreneur gives you 100 tracked trends and 10 trend analyses. Investor raises that to 500 and 100 and adds CSV export; Business reaches 2,000 tracked trends with trend reports. If the data has to land in a spreadsheet, budget for Investor.
7. SparkToro: audience research from one sentence
SparkToro's pitch is "Build an audience from a sentence." Reports cover twelve data types, from demographics and podcasts to Reddit, search keywords and AI prompts. The AI hook is MCP access, which can "connect SparkToro to ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, or any other Model Context Protocol-compatible client", free on any paid plan.
- Free
- 3 previews a month, preview data only, one user.
- Personal, as of October 2026
- $38 a month, "$450 billed yearly", annual only. 4 reports a month, all data types.
- Business
- $150 monthly, or $112 a month billed yearly ($1,344). 25 reports a month, 10 users.
- Agency
- $300 monthly, or $225 a month billed yearly ($2,700). 250 reports a month.
The pricing page forbids bots from extracting results
The page says "we don't allow the crawling or extraction of SparkToro results by bots, scrapers, or unauthorized automated software", so use the MCP connection or the separate paid API. It also never says where the audience data comes from. Ask before a board deck rests on it.
8. Semrush Traffic & Market: competitor traffic at $289 a month

The first Semrush price you meet belongs to a different product. semrush.com/prices/ redirects to the SEO toolkit, from $117.33 a month billed annually or $139 monthly, as of October 2026. Traffic & Market has its own page.
It has one plan, Pro, at $289 a month as of October 2026. Same price either way, and the free trial button shows only in the monthly view. Inside: "Traffic Overview", "Acquisition Channel Mix", "Traffic & Market AI Insights", "Competitor Alerts" and "Up to 100 competitors to analyze".
Nothing on the page says where the traffic numbers come from
Ask during the trial, before $289 a month becomes a habit. For rankings and alerts on your own site, the SEO monitoring and alerts guide covers that job.
9. SurveyMonkey: AI analysis from $39 a month on annual billing
Basic is free: one user, unlimited surveys, 10 questions per survey and "Build with AI" to draft them. The response limit appears only after you sign up.
The monthly plan costs more and leaves out the AI analysis
Standard Monthly is $149 a month for 1,000 responses a month, with no "Analyze with AI" line, as of October 2026. Advantage Annual is $39 a month, $468 billed annually, with 15,000 responses a year, "Analyze with AI" and "Thematic Analysis". Premier Annual is $139 a month ($1,668 a year). (Yes, the cheaper plan is the one with the AI.)
Team Advantage is $30 per user a month for three or more users, billed annually. Extra responses cost $0.15 each, and SurveyMonkey Audience, its respondent panel, is "sold separately" at a price the page does not print.
Already sitting on survey answers? NPS survey analysis covers turning verbatims into themes, and customer feedback analysis handles tickets and reviews.
10. Typeform: AI form creation on Basic, AI analysis from Business

Typeform opens on yearly billing. Basic is $28 a month billed yearly or $39 monthly, with 100 responses a month and "AI-powered form creation", as of October 2026. Plus is $56 or $79 for 1,000 responses a month. Business, at $91 yearly or $129 monthly, is the first plan with "Analyze performance with AI", and it includes 10,000 responses a month. A free plan exists, but the pricing page does not print its limits.
Growth Flow's $0 is a 14-day trial
The Growth Flow card shows "0 USD/mo", then "266 USD/mo after 14 days" and "Credit card required"; monthly billing makes it $379 after the trial, as of October 2026. Research Flow, priced through sales, adds "built-in panel access" for recruiting participants and "Moderated and unmoderated video research".
Research platforms sold by quote, and two pages I could not read

Full-service AI research platforms sit one tier up, and most print no price. quantilope shows the scale: its Business plan for three users says "Pricing starts at $2,300/month" as of October 2026, with an AI co-pilot called quinn, while Pro and Enterprise say "Contact us for pricing". The rest, as read on 10 October 2026:
- Attest prints credit allowances and no prices; one credit is one answer to one question from one person.
- Crayon redirects its pricing URL to a "Request an Estimate" form.
- Conveo sends you to a demo booking, and Outset says "Get custom pricing".
- Glimpse prints no plan prices. Its "It's Free" line belongs to the Chrome extension.
Two pages could not be read at all on 10 October 2026: Remesh's pricing URL returned "Page Not Found", and Similarweb's would not load. Neither means the price is unpublished.
One more name, because it holds the top search result: Manus. Its pricing page lists $20, $40 and $200 a month, or $17, $34 and $167 a month billed yearly, with "In-depth research" on every card and usage counted in credits, as of October 2026. Manus pricing explained walks through those plans; here I note Manus and leave it out of the ten.
Three stacks, priced per month
The totals below are my arithmetic from prices as of October 2026.
The $0 stack trades money for limits
Use Gemini Free for deep research, or Perplexity Free for cited answers; Google Trends plus the Exploding Topics public list for demand; SparkToro Free for three audience previews a month; and SurveyMonkey Basic or Typeform's free plan to ask your customers. The total is $0, and the limits are the cost.
The lean annual stack comes to $94 a month
Perplexity Pro at $17, SparkToro Personal at $38 and SurveyMonkey Advantage at $39, all billed annually, make $94 a month. Per year that is $204 for Perplexity (17 times 12; Perplexity prints no annual total), $450 for SparkToro and $468 for SurveyMonkey: $1,122. That is $6 under 12 times $94, because SparkToro prints $450 for the year, not 12 times $38. Add Semrush Traffic & Market at $289 and the monthly figure becomes $383.
The monthly-only stack starts at $59 a month
Claude Pro or ChatGPT Plus at $20, plus Typeform Basic at $39 monthly, makes $59 a month with no annual commitment. Typeform Basic sends the survey; its AI analysis waits on Business. Add SparkToro Business at $150 monthly and the total reaches $209. SparkToro Personal cannot be bought monthly and Exploding Topics prints no monthly price, so neither appears.
What each job cannot tell you
Desk research works from what already exists in writing: the web, sites you name, files you upload. None of these assistants can put a question to your customers, and none can find what nobody has written down.
Demand data measures interest. A "200K+" bucket or a rising topic says people are paying attention, and says nothing about who would pay. Audience and traffic tools rest on data their pricing pages never describe: SparkToro and Semrush both leave the source unstated.
Surveys hear from whoever you can reach. Your customer list is a narrow slice of your market, and the panels that reach strangers (SurveyMonkey Audience, Typeform Research Flow, Attest) keep their prices off the page.
The validation point follows from all of them. Google's own AI Overview for "ai market research" tells readers "Do Not Skip Human Validation", and it is right: a feature that a deep-research report likes is still a hypothesis until real buyers answer.
One chore here repeats every week: checking what competitors changed. Gravity has no panel, no respondents and no traffic or search data of its own, and it replaces none of the tools above. It is an AI agent platform in open alpha: you type the task, say a Monday digest of competitors' pricing pages and changelogs, and it matches an expert-built agent that runs it on a schedule, as in this competitor tracking setup. Free to start, no card, paid plans from $5 a month; Explore agents.
Which one should you choose?
Start from the job and the budget, and the tool follows. Prices below are as of October 2026.
Solo founder with $0: Gemini Free, Google Trends, SparkToro's three free previews and SurveyMonkey Basic for ten questions to the people you already know. If research is one chore among many, the small-business agent roundup covers the rest.
Marketer sizing a new segment: Perplexity Pro at $17 a month billed annually, for cited research with Statista and PitchBook among the sources, plus SparkToro Personal at $38 a month, billed yearly, to profile that audience.
Product manager validating a feature: desk research on whichever assistant you already pay for, then a survey. SurveyMonkey Advantage reads the answers with AI at $39 a month on annual billing; Typeform Business does it at $129 month to month. The guide to AI agents for product managers covers the rest of the PM week.
Team watching competitors: Semrush Traffic & Market at $289 a month for traffic and channel data. If the real need is a weekly read of their blogs, pricing pages and changelogs, that is a recurring scan, and you can build a research agent yourself.
Anyone who needs real respondents: your own list goes into SurveyMonkey or Typeform. Strangers need a panel, and none of the panels here prints a price, so budget for a sales call first.
FAQ
1. Which AI is best for market research?
It depends on the job. As of October 2026, Gemini's free plan lists Deep Research, and Perplexity Pro, ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro add a research feature for $17 to $20 a month. Demand data comes from Google Trends or Exploding Topics, audiences from SparkToro, competitor traffic from Semrush and surveys from SurveyMonkey or Typeform.
2. Can ChatGPT do market research?
It can do the desk-research part. OpenAI says deep research can search 'the public web or specific sites', work with your uploaded files and include citations or source links. Free has 'Limited deep research' and Plus, at $20 a month billed monthly as of October 2026, has 'Expanded deep research', but neither can field a survey or reach your customers.
3. Can I use AI for market research for free?
Yes, within limits. As of October 2026, Gemini Free lists Deep Research, Perplexity Free answers with citations, Google Trends is free and SparkToro gives 3 free previews a month. SurveyMonkey Basic allows 10 questions per survey with 'Build with AI', though its AI analysis starts at $39 a month billed annually, and Claude Free has no Research.
4. How much do AI market research tools cost?
As of October 2026, desk research runs from $0 to $20 a month, SparkToro from $38 a month on annual billing to $300 monthly, and Semrush Traffic & Market is $289 a month. A lean annual stack comes to $94 a month, or $1,122 a year, while quantilope starts at $2,300 a month and Attest, Crayon, Conveo and Outset print no price.
5. What are the best AI research tools?
For business research, I would start with the four assistants in this guide: Perplexity, ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude, each with a research feature on at least one plan. For academic literature, the AI research assistant guide covers Elicit, Consensus, scite and SciSpace.
6. Can AI replace customer interviews or surveys?
Desk-research AI reads published sources, so to hear from customers you still send a survey or run interviews. Research platforms with interviews exist, such as Outset ('The AI-moderated research platform') and Typeform's Research Flow ('Moderated and unmoderated video research'), but neither printed a price on 10 October 2026. Google's own AI Overview for 'ai market research' says 'Do Not Skip Human Validation'.
7. What are the top 5 AI marketing tools?
That is a marketing-execution question, and this guide covers research only. My comparison of AI marketing agents prices eight platforms side by side.
