On 14 September 2026, Relay.app switched off. It was a well-liked AI workflow tool, five years old, and its paying customers got 60 days' notice and an export button. Some of the products on this page gave their users far less: a few days, or nothing at all.
I have shut down three companies myself, and I wrote about what that was like. What I wanted as a user was a list: which AI products died, how long they lasted, what they had raised and how their users were treated on the way out. The AI graveyards I found were mostly directories of names without dates or sources, and one of the most linked stopped updating in 2023. So I built this one.
It logs every AI tool, AI agent and AI startup shutdown I could verify from January 2023 to today, from big-company sunsets like Google Assistant and ChatGPT Atlas to startups like Humane and Builder.ai. Each row links to the company's own notice or to original reporting. The tracker holds 40 products. For the funding side of the same market, see the AI agent funding tracker, whose acquisitions and shutdowns section covers the current quarter; this page is the full multi-year log.
What the tracker shows
- 38 AI product shutdowns logged between 2 June 2023 and 4 October 2026, plus 2 with a published future date. 8 of the 40 rows are agent products, and 22 are products of large companies rather than startups.
- Median lifespan: 13 months from launch to shutdown, across the 17 closed products with a public launch date. The shortest was Copilot GPT Builder at 6 months.
- Median funding raised before shutdown: $153.8 million across the 6 startups that disclosed a total, which add up to $2.32 billion.
- 59% gave users an export window (13 of 22 with a public notice that settles it). Where the notice and the end date are both public, the median warning was 48 days.
- 6 shutdowns in the last 90 days: Azure AI Anomaly Detector, Notion Mail, Relay.app, Google Assistant, Azure AI Personalizer and more. 2026 to date: 16 logged, against 10 in all of 2025.
Updated . Counts cover shutdowns I could verify against the company's notice or original reporting, not every AI product that quietly stopped.

The graveyard
Newest first, grouped by the year the product closed. Each entry shows when it shut, how long it lived, whether the startup disclosed what it had raised, and what users were told, including whether they got a window to export their data. Products with a published future end date sit at the top.

What the record shows
The biggest threat to an AI product is a bigger platform shipping the same thing. Relay.app's agents were overtaken by automation built into OpenAI's and Google's own tools, by TechCrunch's account. Yupp's founders said the future is agentic systems rather than model comparison. Notion closed Notion Mail in favour of its own AI agents. GitHub retired its App-based Copilot Extensions for MCP, and Sourcegraph ended Cody Free and Pro to push its new agent, Amp.
Big companies kill AI products fast. Microsoft's Copilot GPT Builder lasted about six months, and every GPT built with it was deleted within a month of the notice. OpenAI pulled its AI Text Classifier after six months with a single line on the launch post, and closed ChatGPT Atlas ten months after launch. Google replaced Assistant with Gemini and turned Pixel Studio into a pointer to the Gemini app.
Money does not buy time. Builder.ai had raised more than $450 million and entered insolvency in May 2025. Humane raised more than $230 million and its AI Pin lasted about eleven months on sale. Inflection raised about $1.5 billion before most of its team left for Microsoft and the company turned away from its consumer assistant.
How users are treated on the way out varies enormously. The good notices give a fixed date and a working export, and the best add a refund for unused time: Relay.app, Phind, Dot, Humanloop and Solo all set a date and offered an export. Embodied's Moxie robot stopped working within days with no refunds; Huxe deleted all user data a week after leaving the app stores; Coqui and OtterTune replaced their websites with a single line.
The lesson I take for my own company: if you sell AI agents, assume customers are reading this list, and make export and a clear notice part of the product from day one. At Gravity we will be judged on that too. If you are looking for a replacement for a dead workflow tool, I compared the options in the best Relay.app alternatives.
Change log
One dated line for each batch of rows added or corrected. Corrections name the row and what changed.
- : Tracker opened with 40 verified rows: 38 shutdowns between 2 June 2023 and 1 October 2026 and 2 scheduled, each read against its source before entry.
Methodology
Here is exactly what goes in, so you can decide how far to trust the numbers.
What counts. An AI product or AI startup that shut down, sunset its product, was acqui-hired or acquired with the product discontinued, or pivoted and closed or cut back its original AI product, from 1 January 2023 onward. AI agent products, meaning products that take actions for the user, are flagged. Big-company AI products count too, including cloud AI services with a published retirement date and paid tiers that were discontinued for everyone.
What does not. Rebrands that kept the product running (Bard to Gemini, Power Virtual Agents to Copilot Studio). Model and API version deprecations. Acquisitions where the product kept running. Features paused and later restored. Research demos. Self-driving car programmes. AI startups that pivoted but kept their product alive.
Dates. The shutdown date is the day the service ended when the notice or reporting gives one. When only the announcement is public, the row uses the announcement date and is marked "announced". A future end date is marked "scheduled" and kept out of the closed counts. The launch date is the first public release or launch announcement; when only a year is public (usually the company's founding year), the list says "started" and the row is left out of the median lifespan.
Lifespan is the number of months between the launch date and the shutdown date, computed from the stored dates, not typed in. Funding is the total a startup raised before shutting down, only as a source states it ("more than $450 million" is stored as $450 million); corporate products are not counted. Export window is yes when the notice offered a way to download, export or migrate data before deletion, no when the notice is public and offered none, and blank when the notice is not public.
Sources. Every row cites one to three sources: the company's notice (or its archived copy on the Wayback Machine), a help-center or documentation sunset page, or original reporting. Each source was opened and read before the row went in. Other AI graveyards were used only to find candidates; no row was copied from them.
Refresh. Weekly. A script pulls candidate news stories every week from the free GDELT news index; each candidate is checked against these rules and its source before a row is added, and the numbers on this page are recomputed from the rows. Nothing in the list is edited by hand.
Known gaps. Small AI startups often disappear without a notice or press coverage, so this log undercounts them; the cloud and big-company rows are easier to verify and are therefore overrepresented. Launch dates and funding totals are missing for many rows because no source states them, so the medians rest on smaller samples, given next to each figure. Coverage is English-language.
FAQ
Which AI tools and AI startups have shut down?
As of 4 October 2026 this tracker logs 38 closed AI products since January 2023 and 2 more with a published end date. Recent examples: Relay.app (14 September 2026), Notion Mail (22 September 2026), ChatGPT Atlas (9 August 2026), Roo Code (15 May 2026), Sora (announced 24 March 2026) and Humane's AI Pin (28 February 2025). The full list, newest first, is on this page and in the CSV.
How long do AI products last before they shut down?
The median lifespan in this tracker is 13 months from launch to shutdown, across the 17 closed products with a public launch date (as of 4 October 2026). Consumer AI apps from large companies often last about a year: ChatGPT Atlas lasted 10 months, Microsoft's Copilot GPT Builder 6 months and OpenAI's AI Text Classifier 6 months.
How much money had AI startups raised before they shut down?
Among the 6 startups in this tracker that disclosed a total, the median raised before shutdown was $153.8 million, and together they raised $2.32 billion (as of 4 October 2026). The range runs from Huxe's $4.6 million to Inflection AI's roughly $1.5 billion before its consumer pivot; Builder.ai had raised more than $450 million and Humane more than $230 million.
Do AI companies let users export their data before shutting down?
About 59% did, in 13 of the 22 shutdowns where the notice is public and settles the question. Good examples: Relay.app gave free users 30 days to export and paying users until 14 September 2026; Dot gave a month and a data download; Firebase Studio gives a full year. Bad examples: Microsoft deleted every Copilot GPT within a month, and Embodied's Moxie robot stopped working within days with no refunds.
How many AI agent products have shut down?
8 of the 40 rows are agent products, meaning products that took actions for the user: Relay.app's workflow agents, the Roo Code coding agent, the ChatGPT Atlas agentic browser, ChatGPT plugins, Microsoft's Copilot GPTs, GitHub's App-based Copilot Extensions, Google's Conversational Actions and Firebase Studio. Several were replaced by a bigger platform's own agent rather than by a competitor.
What should I do if an AI tool I rely on shuts down?
Export everything on the day of the notice, not near the deadline: workflows, prompts, conversation history and any files the tool generated. Then check whether the vendor names a migration path (Notion Mail kept its email agents; Sourcegraph moved Cody users to Amp). Before you adopt the next tool, check that it lets you export your data at any time, not only during a wind-down.
Can I use this data?
Yes. The list and the CSV are licensed CC BY 4.0: copy them, chart them, quote the numbers, and credit Gravity's AI tool shutdown tracker with a link to this page. If you spot an error, email support@gravity.fast and I will fix it and note the correction in the change log.
How is this different from other AI graveyards?
Most AI graveyard lists are directories of dead tool names, often without dates or sources, and several stopped updating in 2023. This tracker records one row per product with the shutdown date, launch date, funding, what happened and what users were told, links each row to the company's notice or original reporting, recomputes its numbers weekly and publishes everything as a CSV.
