ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month as of October 2026. Pay it if ChatGPT is part of your working day and you need what OpenAI keeps for Plus and above: the advanced GPT-6 reasoning models, expanded deep research and Codex, ChatGPT Work on the web and on your phone, and no ads.
Skip it if you mostly chat. Free gives everyone unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse-prevention safeguards, and the $8 Go plan adds more uploads, image creation and voice for 40% of the price.
That is the verdict. The rest of this page is the evidence, row by row from OpenAI's own comparison table, and then what exactly the extra $12 over Go buys.
I read every plan card and help article behind it on 13 October 2026. Prices move and OpenAI renames models often, so every price below carries a date, and I name a model only where OpenAI's own table does.
ChatGPT Plus in six lines
- The price: ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month in the US as of October 2026, which is $240 a year. There is no annual plan.
- Worth it for daily work: it adds the advanced GPT-6 reasoning models, expanded deep research and Codex, and ChatGPT Work on web and mobile.
- Not worth it for casual chat: Free has unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse-prevention safeguards, and Go adds more uploads, images and voice for $8.
- The cleanest line is ads: OpenAI says ads may appear on Free and Go, and Plus accounts will not have them.
- Go and Plus have the same context window: 54K for instant chats and 256K for reasoning on both, so the extra $12 buys models and tools.
- Teams and all-day users belong elsewhere: Business for workspace agents and admin, Pro from $100 a month.
How I judged it
Three kinds of OpenAI page, all read on 13 October 2026: the pricing page at chatgpt.com/pricing with its comparison table, the Plus, Go and Pro plan pages, and OpenAI's pricing docs plus four help-centre articles on models, ads, Pro and Business. Nothing else. No review site, no forum thread, no figure from memory.
The pricing page fills in its prices by country, so the number you see depends on where you load it from. I used the US prices in dollars, which OpenAI's pricing docs also print as plain text. The short taglines under each plan name changed between page loads, so I left them out.
There are two limits to state up front. I have not run Free, Go and Plus side by side, and nothing here claims I did. OpenAI also publishes no message counts for Chat on any plan, so I quote none.

What $20 buys that Free and Go do not
The plan cards lean on soft words like "More" and "Expanded". The comparison table underneath is blunter, with a plain value for every plan, mostly Yes, No or Limited. Here are the rows that decide whether Plus is worth $20 a month, with US prices as of October 2026.
| Row on OpenAI's table | Free ($0) | Go ($8) | Plus ($20) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Everyday text chats | Unlimited* | Unlimited* | Unlimited* |
| GPT-6.1 Sol, GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6 Sol | No | No | Yes |
| Legacy models | No | No | Yes |
| Response times | Limited on bandwidth & availability | Limited on bandwidth & availability | Fast |
| Deep research | Limited | Limited | Yes |
| Codex | Limited | Limited | Yes |
| ChatGPT Work | Limited (desktop app) | Limited (desktop app) | Desktop, web, and mobile |
| File uploads | Limited | Yes | Yes |
| Image generation | Limited | Yes | Yes |
| Voice | Yes | Expanded | Expanded |
| Memory | Limited | Yes | Expanded |
Values as shown on the comparison table at chatgpt.com/pricing, Individual tab, read 13 October 2026. Prices are US dollars per month as of October 2026. *OpenAI's footnote: "Usage must be reasonable and comply with our policies. Usage refers to Chat limits." The second row covers three models the table marks the same way.
The table splits in two. The lower rows (uploads, image creation, voice and memory) change between Free and Go. The upper rows (the reasoning models, response times, deep research, Codex and ChatGPT Work) change between Go and Plus. Go buys more of the same. Plus buys a different kind of work.
Thinking levels sit behind the "Limits apply" link on the Plus card. OpenAI's help article on GPT-6 and other models lists Medium and High thinking as included on Plus, and keeps Extra High and Pro thinking for Pro, Business and Enterprise. The same article says "Plus plans include GPT-6 Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex."
OpenAI publishes no message caps for Chat on Free, Go or Plus. The pricing page gives no counts, and the "Limits apply" link on the Plus card leads to a help article about which models and thinking levels each plan gets, with no message counts in it. A review that quotes a fixed number of Plus chat messages every few hours is quoting something OpenAI's pages did not say on 13 October 2026.
Plus is worth it if ChatGPT is part of your working week
Five kinds of use clear the $20 bar, as of October 2026. The more of them describe you, the easier the $20 is to justify.
You write or analyse something on most working days
The advanced GPT-6 reasoning models are on Plus and missing from Go, response times move from "Limited on bandwidth & availability" to "Fast", and you get Medium and High thinking. Interactive tables and charts also start at Plus, which matters if your analysis ends in a spreadsheet.
Spread over a 22-working-day month, $20 is about 91 cents a working day. If ChatGPT drafts, checks or summarises something for you on most of those days, that is an easy sum to clear.
You turn questions into research reports
Deep research is "Limited" on Free and Go and "Yes" on Plus, where the card calls it "Expanded deep research". OpenAI does not say how many reports either level allows. So run the test on your own month: if Go's limit stops you in the first week, Plus is the next step.
You code a few sessions a week
Codex is "Limited" on Free and Go and "Yes" on Plus, where OpenAI's pricing docs size the allowance as enough to "Power a few focused coding sessions each week."
- Codex on Free and Go
- Limited
- Codex on Plus
- Yes, "Expanded Codex usage" on the card
- OpenAI's estimate on Plus, GPT-6.1 Sol
- 15 to 160 local messages per five-hour period
- OpenAI's estimate on Plus, GPT-6 Astra
- 5 to 45 local messages per five-hour period
- Shared with
- ChatGPT Work: "ChatGPT Work and Codex share usage."
Read those ranges the way OpenAI wrote them: "These estimates are not fixed message limits", and "Weekly limits may also apply." If you run out, Plus subscribers can buy additional credits and keep working on the same plan. For the wider picture, here is what OpenAI's Codex agent means for builders.
You need ChatGPT Work away from your desk
Free and Go get ChatGPT Work only in the desktop app, marked "Limited". Plus opens it on desktop, web and mobile, and includes GPT-6 Astra inside it. Whether ChatGPT Work makes ChatGPT an agent is a separate question, and our piece on whether ChatGPT is an AI agent takes it on. One thing Plus does not add is workspace agents: OpenAI's table marks them No on Free, Go, Plus and Pro, and Yes only on Business and Enterprise.
You want ChatGPT without ads
OpenAI's help article on ads says ads may appear on the Free and Go plans, and that Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts will not have ads. Ad testing started in the United States on 9 February 2026. That makes Plus the lowest-priced individual plan OpenAI lists as ad-free, as of October 2026.
If ads are your only complaint, read the rest of that article before paying. It offers a way to "Choose a free, no-ads option with additional limits (fewer messages per day and no access to tools like images)", warns of "Lower usage limits (you may hit rate limits more often)" and adds that "Availability may vary by region and over time." Temporary Chats don't show ads either.
Skip Plus if your use looks like this
In each of these cases another plan fits better than Plus. Prices are US, per month, as of October 2026.
- You ask a few questions a day. Stay on Free. Everyday text chats are unlimited there too, "subject to abuse-prevention safeguards", and every row Plus adds is a work tool you would not open.
- You want more uploads, images and voice without paying $20. Go at $8 moves file uploads and image generation from Limited to Yes, expands voice and adds voice with video. It may show ads.
- Your team needs admin controls or workspace agents. That is Business, at $25 per user per month or $20 billed annually from two seats, and our guide to every ChatGPT plan and price covers the rest.
- You run heavy reasoning or code all day. Pro starts at $100 a month, and OpenAI's docs say Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit on Codex and ChatGPT Work.
Go at $8 vs Plus at $20: what the extra $12 buys
For most people reading this, the real choice is Go or Plus, and the gap is $12 a month as of October 2026. Go already lifts four rows over Free: uploads, image creation, voice and memory. That shrinks the question to one line. Are the rows below worth $12 a month to you?
| Row on OpenAI's table | Go ($8) | Plus ($20) | What the $12 changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| GPT Instant total context window | 54K | 54K | Nothing |
| GPT Reasoning total context window | 256K | 256K | Nothing |
| GPT Instant input maximum | ~40 pages of text | ~40 pages of text | Nothing |
| GPT Reasoning input maximum | ~320 pages of text | ~320 pages of text | Nothing |
| Scheduled tasks | Yes | Yes | Nothing |
| Voice with video | Yes | Yes | Nothing |
| Content is used to train our models | Opt-out available | Opt-out available | Nothing |
| Memory with past chats | Yes | Expanded | More on Plus |
| Image generation with Thinking | No | Yes | Plus only |
| Sites | No | Yes | Plus only |
| Apps connecting to internal tools | No | Yes | Plus only |
| Interactive tables and charts | No | Yes | Plus only |
| Developer mode (beta) | No | Yes | Plus only |
| Ads | May appear | None | Plus removes them |
What the extra $12 buys: Go and Plus values from the comparison table at chatgpt.com/pricing, read 13 October 2026, with US prices per month as of October 2026. The ads row is the one exception: it comes from Go's plan card and OpenAI's help article on ads. The last column is my reading of each row. Rows already in the first table (models, deep research, Codex, ChatGPT Work) are left out.
Start at the top. Go and Plus show identical context windows (54K for instant chats, 256K for reasoning) and identical input maximums, even though the Plus card promises "Expanded memory and context". The memory rows are where Plus moves up; the context rows do not move at all.
Scheduled tasks are on Go as well. The Plus card lists "Projects, scheduled tasks, and custom GPTs", which reads as if they start at $20, but the table marks scheduled tasks Yes on Go and No only on Free. If they were your reason to upgrade, $8 already covers them.
Ads are the clearest difference of all. Go's own card says "This plan may include ads." Plus will not have them, and OpenAI's ads article says so in as many words.

The model rows are the real upgrade. Everything Go lacks in the first table is the work half of ChatGPT: the advanced GPT-6 reasoning models, deep research and Codex beyond "Limited", and ChatGPT Work outside the desktop app. This table adds Sites, image generation with Thinking and apps that connect to internal tools. Pay the $12 if you will use that half every week.
One catch before you settle on Go. OpenAI says "ChatGPT Go is available in select regions. Availability may expand over time." The page names no countries, so if Go is not sold where you live, your choice is Free or Plus.
The math: $240 a year, no annual discount
Plus is $20 a month as of October 2026, so a year of it costs $240. Go is $8 a month, or $96 a year. The gap is $144 a year.
There is no yearly Plus price to bring that down. OpenAI's pricing FAQ says it offers "monthly plans for Go, Plus and Business and annual plans for Business and Enterprise", and the individual plan cards carry no monthly or annual toggle. Pro is monthly too: its help article says "Annual billing and payment for multiple months in advance are not available."
The upside of monthly billing is that nothing locks you in. The Plus page says "You can manage or cancel your subscription anytime through your account." Go, Plus, Pro and Business all take any major credit card, per OpenAI's pricing FAQ.
So the cheapest honest test is one month. Spend it on the work you would actually pay for (a report, an analysis, a coding session) and decide before the second charge. I won't tell you Plus pays for itself in so many hours. That sum needs your hourly rate, and I don't have it.
Look at the rivals before you pay
Plus, at $20 a month as of October 2026, is not the only paid AI assistant you could choose. This page sticks to OpenAI's pages, so it quotes no rival prices. A dated source beats a guessed number.
If Claude Pro is the other name on your list, our Claude pricing explainer has every Claude plan and price. For any rival, check it against the rows that decided Plus here:
- Which top reasoning model the plan includes, by name.
- Whether research reports are just "limited" or come with a stated allowance.
- How the coding agent's usage is counted, and whether it shares a pool with anything else.
- Ads.
- Whether there is an annual price, and whether you can cancel any month.
- Whether the plan is sold in your country at all. Go shows that a cheaper tier can be regional.
The verdict, by user type
Here is where I land for each kind of use, at US prices as of October 2026.
- You ask the odd question: Free.
- You want more uploads, images and voice for less: Go at $8, if it is sold where you live.
- You write, analyse or research on most working days: Plus at $20.
- You code a few sessions a week: Plus, keeping in mind that Codex and ChatGPT Work share one allowance.
- You want an ad-free subscription for the least money: Plus, unless the free no-ads option's lower limits suit you.
- Your team needs admin controls and workspace agents: Business, from $20 per user per month billed annually, with a two-seat minimum.
- You hit Plus limits every week on reasoning or coding: Pro, from $100 a month.
If you want one test, count the rows in both tables where Plus beats Go, ads included, that matter to you this week. Zero means keep the $20. Two or more means pay it. One is a toss-up, and a single paid month settles it.
Some people asking whether Plus is worth it don't really want a better chat window. They want a piece of recurring work done: a Monday research digest, an inbox triaged every morning, a weekly report from their tools. ChatGPT lists scheduled tasks from Go upward; Gravity is built the other way round. You describe the task and an expert-built agent runs it, on a schedule if you want. It is not a chat app and does not give you ChatGPT or GPT models; our explainer on agent vs chatbot draws that line properly. Gravity is in public beta: Basic is free with one agent and no card, and Pro is $5 a month during the beta (see pricing). Explore agents.
If a recurring job was the real reason you looked at Plus, two more reads help: how to write a prompt for a recurring agent so it does not drift, and the cheapest AI agent platforms compared on price.
FAQ
1. Is ChatGPT Plus worth it for everyday use?
For casual everyday use, it usually is not. As of October 2026, Free already includes unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse-prevention safeguards, and the $8 Go plan adds more uploads, image creation and voice. Plus earns its $20 a month when you use the advanced GPT-6 reasoning models, deep research, Codex or ChatGPT Work on the web and mobile most weeks.
2. Does ChatGPT Plus remove ads?
Yes. OpenAI's help article on ads, which I read on 13 October 2026, says ads may appear on the Free and Go plans and that Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts will not have ads. The same article also lists a free, no-ads option "with additional limits (fewer messages per day and no access to tools like images)", and says availability may vary by region.
3. Is there a yearly ChatGPT Plus plan?
No. OpenAI's pricing FAQ says it offers "monthly plans for Go, Plus and Business and annual plans for Business and Enterprise", so Plus is $20 a month with no annual discount, or $240 over twelve months, as of October 2026. The Plus page adds that you can "manage or cancel your subscription anytime through your account."
4. Is ChatGPT Plus unlimited?
It is unlimited only for everyday text chats, which Free, Go and Pro get too, under OpenAI's footnote that "Usage must be reasonable and comply with our policies." For uploads, images, deep research, Codex and ChatGPT Work, OpenAI publishes no fixed numbers for Plus, and the plan card simply links to "Limits apply". If you reach the Codex and ChatGPT Work limit, OpenAI says Plus subscribers can buy additional credits to keep working on Plus.
5. Is Go enough instead of Plus?
For chatting, uploads, image creation and voice, often yes: Go is $8 a month as of October 2026 and shows the same context-window figures as Plus on OpenAI's comparison table. It has only limited deep research and Codex, none of the advanced GPT-6 reasoning models, no Sites and ChatGPT Work only in the desktop app, and it may show ads. OpenAI also sells Go only "in select regions", so check that it is offered where you live.
6. When should I move from Plus to Pro?
Move when you hit Plus limits on reasoning or coding most weeks, or when buying extra Codex and ChatGPT Work credits has become routine. Pro has plans at $100, $200 or $500 a month as of October 2026, and OpenAI's docs say "Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit" for Codex and ChatGPT Work. The ChatGPT Pro tiers are broken down in our full plan guide.
