"Shopify AI agent" means two completely different products depending on who is saying it. Shopify's own AI is Sidekick, an assistant that sits in your admin and helps you run the store. The Shopify App Store sells dozens of AI agents that talk to your shoppers. Confusing the two is the single most common mistake merchants make when shopping for this.

What Shopify actually ships under "AI agent"
Shopify describes Sidekick as an AI-enabled commerce assistant designed to make it easier to start, run and grow a business on Shopify. That is broad, so here is the concrete version of what merchants actually use it for.
Answering questions about your own data. Rather than building a report by hand, you ask in plain English. Which products sold best in a period, where returns are concentrated, how a campaign performed. Sidekick has direct access to your store data, which is the thing a general chatbot cannot replicate.
Building things in the admin. It can create reports, set up Shopify Flow automations, and make theme edits from a description rather than a settings menu. For merchants who know what they want but not where Shopify hides the control, this is the most immediately useful capability.
Generating small custom apps. Sidekick can produce a simple custom admin app from a prompt. This is the most agentic thing it does, and it is gated: it requires the Grow plan or above, and there are hourly and weekly quotas on generation.
Working within permissions, and asking first. Every staff member can use Sidekick according to their existing admin permissions, so it does not become a way around access control. It also shows you the action it intends to take before changing the store, which matters when the tool has write access to a live shop.
Alongside Sidekick, Shopify has been building for a world where agents shop on behalf of customers, publishing guidance on agentic commerce and shipping tooling for agent integration. That is a different subject from Sidekick, and it is aimed at how your store gets discovered and transacted with by other people's agents rather than what you can automate today.
What a Shopify AI agent costs
The two layers price completely differently, which is the practical reason to keep them separate in your head.
| Layer | Who it works for | Typical cost | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sidekick (Shopify's own) | You, in the admin | Included with your Shopify plan | Usage limits vary by plan; app generation needs Grow or above |
| App Store AI agents | Your shoppers, on the storefront | Separate monthly app subscription, often usage tiered | Scoped to the channel the app owns, usually chat or support |
| Cross-tool agent platform | Your operations, across systems | Separate subscription, not per app | Needs connecting to each system you want it to touch |
The important line in that table is the first one. Sidekick costs nothing extra, which means that for most merchants the correct first step is to use the thing already included before subscribing to anything. A surprising number of App Store purchases duplicate work Sidekick already does in the admin.
Where the App Store earns its money is the storefront: a customer-facing assistant that answers shopper questions, handles order tracking and return queries, and does it at three in the morning. Sidekick does not do that job. If you are comparing entry-level costs across the wider market, our roundup of the cheapest AI agent platforms prices the general-purpose options on real all-in cost.
What we found researching this
Two things stood out while reading Shopify's own material against the third-party guides that rank alongside it.
The word "agent" is doing too much work in this market. Search for "Shopify AI agent" and you get Shopify's educational posts explaining what AI agents are in general, App Store listings selling customer service bots, and guides to Sidekick, all competing for the same phrase. These are three different purchases. A merchant who reads a general explainer, then buys a support bot, then discovers Sidekick was included all along has spent money to solve a problem they had not defined. Naming the audience first, merchant or shopper, resolves it immediately.
The gating is where the real limits live. "Included with your plan" is accurate and incomplete. Features and usage limits vary by plan, and the most agentic capability, generating custom apps, requires Grow or above and comes with hourly and weekly quotas. If your evaluation of Sidekick depends on that capability, check your tier before drawing conclusions, because the same product behaves quite differently at the bottom and top of the plan ladder.
The approval behaviour is also worth calling out as a genuine design strength. A tool with write access to a live store that shows you the action before taking it is making the right trade. It is slower than full autonomy and considerably safer, and for a shop where a bad bulk edit costs real revenue, that is the correct default.
The gap: work neither layer covers
Sidekick is bounded by the Shopify admin. App Store agents are bounded by the channel they own. The work that falls between them is ordinary store operations that touch more than one system:
- Supplier and inventory work. A restock decision usually involves a supplier email or spreadsheet, a lead time, and then the Shopify catalogue. Sidekick sees the last part. Our guide to agent-driven inventory restock covers the full loop.
- Recovery flows that leave the store. Abandoned cart work spans email, ads and the store itself, which is the shape covered in abandoned cart recovery.
- Reputation work across channels. Reviews arrive on your product pages and on marketplaces and social, and answering them well means reading all of it. See review response.
- Anything ending in your books. Reconciling payouts, fees and refunds against your accounting system is outside both layers entirely.
For the broader picture of what a store can hand to an agent, our guide for Shopify store owners works through the tasks by function rather than by tool.
How to decide, by situation
- You have not used Sidekick yet. Start there before buying anything. It is included, it has your store data, and it covers more admin work than most merchants expect.
- Shoppers are waiting for answers. That is a storefront problem and Sidekick does not solve it. A customer-facing App Store agent is the right category.
- You want custom admin tooling. Sidekick can generate small apps, but confirm you are on Grow or above and read the quotas before planning around it.
- Your bottleneck spans systems. Suppliers, email, spreadsheets, accounting. Neither Shopify layer reaches across those, and a cross-tool agent will.
- You are on a starter plan and evaluating. Remember that usage limits vary by plan, so judge Sidekick's ceiling at the tier you will actually run, not the one in the demo.
Where Gravity fits next to Shopify
Gravity is not a Shopify app and does not try to be a better admin assistant than the one Shopify built into its own product. Sidekick has direct access to your store data and understands Shopify's own workflows, and for anything that begins and ends in the admin it should be your first choice.
Gravity is for the operations work that crosses tools. You describe the task in plain language, for example checking supplier lead times against current stock and drafting the reorder, or reconciling a week of payouts against your books, and the agent runs it across the systems you already use rather than inside one of them. Gravity has a free tier at $0 a month with one agent, and paid plans start at $20 a month with a lot of usage included, with the option to buy extra usage beyond your plan as volume grows.
The clean division for a merchant: Sidekick for the admin, an App Store agent for the storefront if shoppers need answering, and a cross-tool agent for the operations that run between your store and everything else.
Frequently asked questions
What is Shopify's AI agent called?
Sidekick. It is Shopify's own AI commerce assistant and it works inside your Shopify admin, answering questions about your store data, building reports, creating Flow automations, editing your theme and generating small custom admin apps.
Is Shopify Sidekick free?
Sidekick is included with your Shopify plan with no separate subscription. Features and usage limits vary by plan tier, and generating custom apps requires the Grow plan or above with hourly and weekly quotas.
What is the difference between Sidekick and an AI agent app from the Shopify App Store?
Audience. Sidekick works for you, the merchant, inside the admin. Most App Store AI agents are customer-facing and work for your shoppers, handling chat, support and sales conversations on the storefront. They solve different problems and are not alternatives to each other.
Can Sidekick make changes to my store on its own?
It shows you the action before making a change rather than altering your store silently, and it operates within each staff member's existing admin permissions, so it cannot reach data or features that person is not authorised to use.
Can Shopify's AI agent work with tools outside Shopify?
Sidekick is scoped to the Shopify admin and your store data. Work that involves supplier emails, spreadsheets, marketing tools or your accounting system sits outside it, and needs either a person or an agent connected to several systems at once.
Do I need an App Store AI agent if I already have Sidekick?
Only if you need a shopper-facing assistant. Sidekick does not answer customer questions on your storefront. If your problem is admin work rather than customer conversations, start with Sidekick, since it is already included in your plan.
