On this page

Studying is really two jobs. Understanding something the first time, and still having it in your head three weeks later. Every tool sold as an AI study assistant promises both, and the only place that promise gets specific is the pricing page.

So I read the pricing pages. Anthropic's, OpenAI's and Perplexity's, all on 26 September 2026. What follows is what they say, with the date and the currency attached, because both of those move.

One thing caught me out. Opened from Bangalore, OpenAI's page quoted me rupees.

If you want the broader kit, including tools that run on a schedule without you, that is my roundup of the AI agents students actually use. This page is narrower: the tool you open when you sit down with the material.

TL;DR

Three pricing pages, one honest summary

  1. The free tiers do most of the studying. Claude's free plan is $0 and lists web search, file creation, code execution and memory across conversations.
  2. Claude Pro is $17 and $20, and both are true. $17 a month is the annual rate, billed as $200 up front. Billed monthly it is $20.
  3. ChatGPT's number depends on where you open it. Read from India in September 2026: ₹0 free, ₹399 Go, ₹1,999 Plus, from ₹10,699 Pro.
  4. Perplexity Pro is $17 a month, "or equivalent, when billed annually". The vendor's own wording, with a free tier under it.
  5. Paying buys headroom, not a cleverer tutor. The upgrade lists on all three pages are mostly usage and message ceilings.
  6. Gravity does not tutor. It runs the admin around studying, like turning a folder of notes into one summary document every Sunday. First agent free.

How I checked these

Four questions, asked of everything here. On a student budget they matter more than a feature grid:

  • What does the free tier cover before it stops? The ceiling, not the feature list, is what eventually sends you to a card.
  • What does the first paid rung cost, in what currency, read from where? A price with no currency and no date on it is a rumour.
  • Does the upgrade buy capability or headroom? Two different purchases, and the pricing pages are clearer about which is which than the reviews are.
  • Who does the work? You ask an assistant and judge each answer. An agent runs a standing instruction without you. Studying is mostly the first kind, which the student roundup argues at length, so I take it as settled here. Boundaries: the difference between an agent, a chatbot and an assistant.

The limits, because they shape the list. I read pricing pages on 26 September 2026 and did nothing else: no revision bake-off, no adoption statistics, no scored results. The list also only covers tools whose pricing I could read that day, so some well known study products are absent for that reason alone. A guessed price is worse than an absent one.

Every figure is what the vendor's own pricing page showed on 26 September 2026. OpenAI shows local currency by region and I read its page from India, so the rupee figures are India prices: elsewhere you will see a different currency. Anthropic's page showed US dollars. Perplexity's shows dollars plus the words "or equivalent, when billed annually".

The price depends on where you open the page

OpenAI quoted me rupees. I opened the pricing page from Bangalore on 26 September 2026 and it showed ₹0 for the free plan, ₹399 a month for Go, ₹1,999 a month for Plus and from ₹10,699 a month for Pro. Those are India prices, and I have not converted any of them, because a conversion would invent a number OpenAI never showed me.

This is rarely stated in price roundups, and it was not obvious to me until the page quoted me rupees. When a vendor serves local currency by region, that figure is right in one region and the reader everywhere else budgets for a charge that never arrives. Perplexity says the same thing more quietly: Pro is $17 a month "or equivalent, when billed annually", and the phrase carrying the weight is "or equivalent".

So apply this to any price you read anywhere, mine included. It is a number, on a date, in a currency, from one country. Open the vendor's page yourself before you subscribe. Ten seconds, and it is the only figure that reaches your card.

Must read: before you pay for anything here, see how far a free plan goes in the free tier comparison across AI platforms. A week of reading and drafting may never reach the ceiling.

1. Claude: best when you do not understand the material yet

Anthropic's pricing page on a dark background, with an Individual, Team and Enterprise, API toggle above plan cards: Free at $0 labelled free for everyone, and Pro at $17 with the line per month with annual subscription discount, $200 billed up front, $20 if billed monthly. A cookie settings panel covers the third card.
anthropic.com/pricing, read 26 September 2026. The Pro card prints both the $17 annual rate and the $20 monthly rate in the same paragraph.

The free plan is $0. Anthropic's page lists chat on web, desktop and mobile, web search, file creation and code execution, memory across conversations, connected apps and tools, and Artifacts. For a term of reading and drafting, that is a lot of tool for no money.

Pro carries two prices and the page states both. It is $17 a month with the annual discount, billed as $200 up front, or $20 a month billed monthly. That buys more usage, task hand-off and scheduling, Claude Desktop, more models, and Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365. Max sits above it from $100 a month, for either 5x or 20x Pro's usage.

What the free tier already covers

Read that free list again and notice what is not missing. Search, files, code, memory. The upgrade raises a ceiling, so the honest question before paying is how often you reach it.

Pros

  • Free tier at $0
  • Web search, file creation, code execution and memory across conversations all sit on the free tier
  • The page publishes both Pro prices, the monthly one included

Cons

  • The $17 rate means $200 leaves your account in one go
  • $20 a month billed monthly is a professional price on a student budget
  • The upgrade is mostly headroom, so buying it for better answers is buying the wrong thing
Best for
The chapter you have read three times and still cannot summarise.
Pricing
Free $0. Pro $17 a month with the annual discount, billed as $200 up front, or $20 billed monthly. Max from $100 a month for 5x or 20x Pro's usage. As of 26 September 2026.
Free tier
Yes, $0, and the rung to stay on until a ceiling forces the question.
Verdict
Start here, stay free until a deadline forces the question. The same decision outside a study context is worked through in the guide to choosing a personal AI assistant.

2. ChatGPT: the all-rounder, priced in your own currency

OpenAI's ChatGPT pricing page opened from India, showing four individual plan cards quoting rupees: Free at ₹0 per month, Go at ₹399 per month, Plus at ₹1,999 per month and Pro from ₹10,699 per month, with the Free card listing unlimited text chats, limited messages with uploads and limited, slower image generation.
openai.com/chatgpt/pricing, read from Bangalore on 26 September 2026. This is the evidence for the whole regional-pricing point: the same page shows a different currency and different numbers somewhere else, so these four figures are India prices only.

Read from India, the free plan is ₹0 a month: unlimited text chats, a limited number of messages with uploads, and image generation that is both limited and slower. Plenty of studying fits inside that, and uploads are the ceiling you meet first.

The ladder above it, again as India pricing shown in September 2026. Go at ₹399 a month buys more messages with tools, more uploads, more image creation and more voice. Plus at ₹1,999 a month adds advanced reasoning and expands the message and upload allowances. Pro starts at ₹10,699 a month for 5x more usage.

Which rung a student actually needs

Look at what the rungs are made of: messages, uploads, tools, voice, usage. One mentions reasoning and the rest is quantity. If you hit that wall, it is usually one fortnight of term rather than all of it: the literature review, or the week the essays collide. That argues for the cheapest paid rung in that month, then free again after.

Best for
One assistant you will use for study and for everything else in the same tab.
Pricing
India pricing as shown on 26 September 2026: Free ₹0, Go ₹399 a month, Plus ₹1,999 a month, Pro from ₹10,699 a month. Your own country will show its own currency and its own numbers.
Free tier
Yes, ₹0 in India, with limits on uploads and on image generation.
Verdict
The safest choice if you only ever buy one subscription, and the one where checking your local price matters most. If where your material goes is part of the decision, that belongs in the private AI assistant conversation.

Studying is yours. The Sunday admin around it does not have to be. Apply to the alpha and your first agent is free, no card.

3. Perplexity: the one I can price but not review

The top of the perplexity.ai/pro page, dark themed, carrying the vendor's own marketing headline beside a graphic of assorted AI model logos, with Login or sign up for free and Compare plans buttons and a cookie policy panel in the corner. No plan price is visible in this part of the page.
perplexity.ai/pro, read 26 September 2026. The plan numbers sit further down the same page, which is all I checked here.

Perplexity Pro is $17 a month "or equivalent, when billed annually", straight off the product page on 26 September 2026. Max sits above it at $167 a month on the same wording, which no student needs to think about. A free tier sits underneath both.

That is where my knowledge of it stops, and saying so beats filling the gap with adjectives. I checked the price. I did not verify the feature list on that visit, so you will not catch me telling you how it compares with the other two.

How far my check went

Verified: the plan costs, the annual-billing wording and the free tier, all read on 26 September 2026. One thing to watch if you open the page yourself, it carries a demo answer full of unrelated dollar figures from a sample report, and none of those are plan prices. If source-led research is your task, the longer treatment is the AI research assistant comparison.

Best for
Readers who already know they want it and are here for the number.
Pricing
Pro $17 a month, "or equivalent, when billed annually". Max $167 a month on the same wording. As of 26 September 2026.
Free tier
Yes, a free tier sits under Pro. I did not test what it includes.
Verdict
I can tell you what it costs and nothing else, so open the free tier and form your own view before the card comes out.

4. Gravity: the admin around studying, not the studying

This is my product, so discount me accordingly. It is last because it is the only thing on this page that will not help you understand a single paragraph of your reading.

Gravity is a task worker. You describe a job in plain words and an agent someone else built runs it on a schedule. Around a course that means the chores: chasing down next week's readings, turning a folder of notes into one summary document, collecting sources into a single place, sending yourself the same digest every Sunday.

It does not explain a concept, make flashcards or quiz you the night before. If that is what you came for, the first three sections of this page are the ones that matter.

Where the line sits

Studying is judgement work, and you have to be inside the loop for it to count. The admin around it is repetition, and repetition is the part worth handing to something else. A small slice, deliberately.

Best for
The weekly collecting, summarising and sending that surrounds a course and quietly eats a Sunday.
Pricing
First agent free, no card. Then Pro at $5 a month during the alpha, or Max at $20 a month for more agents and usage. Buy more usage from your account if you run out. As of September 2026.
Free tier
Yes. Your first agent is free.
Verdict
Worth your time only if repetition is what costs you hours. Gravity is in private alpha, so the catalogue is still short, and the two nearest reads are creating your own agent for free and building a research agent step by step.

Which one should you choose?

Open Claude's free tier first. It costs nothing, and you may get through a term of reading and drafting without ever meeting its ceiling.

Perplexity's free tier is the next one to open if you already know you want it. I priced it on 26 September 2026 and did not verify what it does, so form your own view before the $17 a month.

Choose ChatGPT if you want one assistant for study and everything else, then check the price from your own country before deciding it is affordable. Whichever of the three you land on, pay for exactly one, in the month you hit a wall: dissertation fortnight, exam block, the two weeks of a literature review. Cancel after. I would not hold two at once.

The always-on tools are a separate decision, laid out in the personal AI agents roundup and, for the money question, in the list of agents with genuine free plans. If you wanted the whole student toolkit, go back to the roundup written for students, which covers the discounts, the offers and where the academic line sits.

And if the collecting and the sending is what eats your hours, that is the one job I would hand to Gravity. First agent free, and it still will not teach you anything.

FAQ

Is there a genuinely free AI study assistant?

Yes, more than one. Claude's free plan is $0 and lists web search, file creation, code execution, memory across conversations and Artifacts. ChatGPT's free plan showed ₹0 a month in India with unlimited text chats and limited messages with uploads, and Perplexity runs a free tier under Pro. All read on 26 September 2026.

Why does ChatGPT show me a different price than the one in this post?

Because OpenAI shows local currency by region, and I read its pricing page from India on 26 September 2026. The ₹399 and ₹1,999 figures here are India prices, not global ones. Open the page from where you live before you budget.

Is Claude Pro $17 or $20 a month?

Both, and Anthropic's own page gives both. $17 a month is the rate with the annual discount, billed as $200 up front. $20 is the price billed monthly. Read on 26 September 2026.

Which one should I use for exam revision?

Start on a free tier, because revision weeks are short and the free ceilings may sit further out than you expect. Claude's free plan is the one I would open first for material you cannot get through alone. I have not run a revision trial, so treat it as a route and judge the result yourself.

Can one of these read my own lecture slides?

ChatGPT's free plan lists limited messages with uploads and its paid rungs list more upload headroom. Anthropic's free list names web search, file creation and code execution, with no upload allowance named on it. Check the current page before you rely on either for a deadline.

Does Gravity work as a study assistant?

No. It does not tutor, explain concepts or make revision material. It runs the admin around studying, like turning a folder of notes into one summary document every Sunday, and the first agent is free.
